What is a Master Saddler?
With roots dating back to a guild established in the 1600’s and based in the UK, The Society of Master Saddlers is the governing body for the Saddlery Industry worldwide. Achieving this professional status of Master Saddler requires years of education, examinations and a defined apprenticeship.
Barrington Saddlery’s Michael Dainton is one of the five “Master Saddler" under the Society of Master Saddlers that reside within the United States.
His talent and expertise have created custom pieces commissioned by members of the British Royal Family , and ceremonial Draft horse show harnesses for major breweries. Their many honors extend internationally for custom fitting and equipping Olympians for equestrian leather.
In addition Barrington Saddlery is thrilled to have an additional member of the Saddle Shop Team, Kyle Anderson, a "Qualified Saddler" by the Society of Master Saddlers..

Saddle Fitting Services
The Professionals at Barrington Saddlery, LLC recognize the necessity of a properly fitting saddle for both the rider and horse.
100% Comfort and Harmony
First, the horse’s template is taken; this gives us a record of the horse’s back shape. The template is used in the workshop if adjustments to the saddle are needed. Second, various new saddles that fit the rider are evaluated on the horse’s back. Those that do not fit the horse are ruled out. Usually there are several saddles that fit both horse and rider, or that can be adjusted to fit. The rider is then given opportunity to ride in these saddles. The saddles are ridden without a saddle pad so that the fit of the saddle is not disguised. Based on our observations, measurements and experience, we then advise on what saddle fits the horse and rider best.
First, we check the saddle to insure soundness. Then we take the horse’s template giving us a record of the horse’s back shape. The template will be used back in the workshop if adjustments to the saddle are needed. The saddle is then evaluated on the horses back. Sometimes it is necessary to see the saddle ridden in. We can then advise on the fit and any adjustments needed.

A Message From our Newest SMS Qualified Saddler
"In January 2013, I started my four year apprenticeship through the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) under Barrington Saddlery’s own SMS Master Saddler Michael Dainton.
Each year I have traveled to England to undergo specific training and skills tests. I completed all of my skills tests satisfactorily including basic tack, driving harness and a saddle which was my final test before graduating from “apprentice” to “qualified saddler”. In three years I will be qualified to be a Master Saddler.
In the photo above , I am attending the 2017 Society of Master Saddlers National Saddlery Competition & Ceremony to receive my certificate of completion from HRH Princess Anne.” -Kyle
Barrrington Saddlery could not be more proud of of Kyle and his accomplishments and dedication. He is the only Qualified Saddler in the United States. Michael Dainton is one of only four SMS Master Saddlers in the U.S. currently!
